TechInPacific – A joint initiative of ABC International Development, CARE Vanuatu, and Sista coined Girls Online! (GO!) Project will release a new information kit aimed at girls with access to the internet.
The kit consisting of how-to videos and booklets will demonstrate the importance of cybersafety, guiding girls on matters such as cyberbullying, picture abuse, and privacy protection.
“The videos and booklets have been developed by a group of Ni-Vanuatu girls and women, so they contain authentic, targeted, and practical advice, support, and referral pathways,” says Juliet Matansawan, GO! Cybersafety Coordinator from CARE Vanuatu.
Yasmine Bjornum, Executive Director of Sista added, “We have been working with young women who have courageously shared their personal stories and the challenges they faced in cyberspace. Young women are experiencing depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, and internalizing shame as a result of having their privacy breached, being a victim of cyberbullying, or having their image shared without their consent.
“We hope these resources will be the start of a movement to make cyberspace safer for young women and girls.”
A new online campaign along with the kit launch has started today on Sista’s official Facebook where participants can engage in their prompts and posts, as well a chance of winning a GO! T-shirts or stickers and be featured on the Facebook page.
The GO! Project is funded by the Australian Government as part of the Cyber and Critical Tech Cooperation Project, which aims to empower girls in addressing cybersafety issues that they care about and in ways they can relate to. These new resources are based upon real-life experiences of young women to help others navigate the cyber world safely and productively.
