In Fiji, Taiwan’s innovative approach to “fruit diplomacy” has introduced cutting-edge technology to bolster the Pacific Island’s agricultural sector. Despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Fiji, both parties have continued to deepen their collaboration and exchanges, as reported by CNA. According to Taiwan’s Representative in Fiji, Paul Chen, the Taiwan Technical Mission has utilized advanced technology to aid Fiji in enhancing its agricultural productivity and quality.
The recent development in Suva, the Nausori farm, covers an expanse of three hectares and showcases dragon fruit and guava in its demonstration fields. The farm is also equipped with smart greenhouses and research labs designed for the large-scale production of seedlings. This initiative aims to rejuvenate Fiji’s banana industry and explore the cultivation of new crops, including taro.
These measures will enhance food security within the nation and across the Pacific region, especially in the face of climate change challenges. According to CNA, the farm is slated to become fully operational by May.
Taiwan’s enduring practice of ‘fruit diplomacy’ has greatly advantaged farmers in Fiji while also fortifying the strong ties between Taiwan and the nations of the Pacific islands, stated the Taipei Trade Office in Fiji.
Following Fiji’s independence in 1971, Taiwan inaugurated its trade office in Fiji’s capital the subsequent year and established a technical mission in 1978. Recently, it has supported local farmers in cultivating high-value crops like guava and dragon fruit, providing guidance on marketing, product promotion, and developing export channels.
The technical mission also runs an aquaculture facility in the country’s north. This station is dedicated to advancing aquaculture initiatives. It offers advice on cultivating species such as shrimp, grouper, and seabass, among others, to enhance the economic well-being of local farmers.
Taiwan maintains diplomatic relations with just three Pacific Island nations: the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Tuvalu. Last month, Nauru ended its diplomatic relationship with Taiwan.
