The government is making significant investments in ensuring the safety and security of its citizens in the digital realm, with one of its key efforts being the development of a National Cybersecurity Strategy.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized that this strategy is crucial for strengthening Fiji’s cybersecurity framework, especially in light of the millions lost to eBay scams.
Kamikamica also noted that Fiji has officially deposited its instruments of accession to the Budapest Convention, a process carried out with bipartisan support.
He further highlighted that an initiative to enhance the legislative framework is in progress, backed by donor agencies.
“This review will be aligned with international best practices, ensuring that our laws are not only current but also capable of addressing the ever-evolving nature of scams.”
Kamikamica stressed that the parliamentary process will be instrumental in maintaining trust, integrity, and security.
While the rapid technological advancements in Fiji offer significant growth opportunities, Kamikamica acknowledged that they have also contributed to the increasing sophistication and frequency of scams.
