Key Industry Leaders Convene to Shape Fiji’s IT Future

As the world experiences a technological renaissance, key industry leaders such as Google, Starlink, and Telecom have joined forces with Fiji National University to discuss the future landscape of the Information Technology sector.

Speaking at the 5th National Conference on Information Technology, held this morning at the Pearl Resort, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized that IT is shaping every aspect of both professional and personal lives.

Kamikamica highlighted the importance of understanding that technology is not an end in itself, but a means to achieve greater efficiency, equity, and sustainability within societies.

He pointed out that the rapid pace of technological advancement requires not only keeping up but also anticipating and preparing for the next wave of innovations.

Kamikamica noted that Fiji, once disconnected from global communications infrastructure, now has access to Starlink Satellite Broadband technology, enabling the country to connect to the world.

He also mentioned that the government is actively working to create the right environment and provide the necessary resources for revolutionary innovation and sustainable development in Fiji.

Additionally, Kamikamica referenced the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision until 2050, which focus on catalyzing economic growth and diversifying the economy, with particular emphasis on Information and Communication Technology as well as Research, Development, and Innovation.

Meanwhile, Fiji National University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Doctor Isimeli Tagicakiverata, stated that the discussions, insights, and ideas emerging from the conference would help shape the future of IT.

Tagicakiverata remarked that FNU’s efforts to offer cutting-edge courses and promote research innovation have been instrumental in preparing students for the future.

He also noted that operational actions alone are insufficient, and that revolutionary innovation is what inspires creative ideas and pushes boundaries.

The theme of the conference is “Fostering Operational Excellence through Revolutionary Innovation, Sustainable Development, and Governance.”
