SpaceX has unveiled its plans to bring Starlink satellite internet services to Papua New Guinea, aiming to significantly improve digital connectivity in the region. Speaking at the PNG Resource Week event in Sydney, Andrew Matlock, SpaceX’s Director of Enterprise Sales, highlighted the company’s efforts in advancing discussions with the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) to support the launch of operations in the country.
As a pioneer in space innovation, SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, has revolutionized space exploration through groundbreaking technologies such as the reusable Falcon 9 rockets and the highly anticipated Starship. These innovations have dramatically reduced costs and improved accessibility for space-related ventures. Central to SpaceX’s mission is Starlink, an initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide by delivering fast and reliable internet to underserved communities worldwide.
Matlock emphasized the critical role Starlink plays in addressing global internet disparities, pointing out that many regions lack sufficient connectivity. “There’s a third of the world without any internet access and another third where connectivity is unreliable. We’re determined to change this,” he stated.
The Starlink network comprises thousands of satellites positioned in low-Earth orbit, creating a strong infrastructure designed to provide high-speed internet to remote and hard-to-reach areas. With over 7,200 satellites already deployed, SpaceX has enabled nearly five million users across the globe to access its services.
Matlock also highlighted SpaceX’s commitment to overcoming regulatory challenges to expand accessibility in emerging markets like Papua New Guinea. “It’s not just about deploying the technology; it’s about making it available to the people. That requires significant work with local regulatory authorities,” he explained.
