Diabetes remains a significant health concern in Fiji, driving Diabetes Fiji to implement innovative strategies to improve patient care and increase awareness.
Acting Chief Executive Kini Marawa has unveiled plans for 2025, which include the adoption of technology-driven solutions. These plans feature the development of a mobile app designed to help patients track their blood sugar levels and access telemedicine consultations. This initiative aims to empower individuals by improving accessibility and ensuring more effective management of their condition.
Marawa also emphasized a commitment to community outreach programs and initiatives, ensuring quality healthcare reaches underserved populations. “The goal is to provide blood sugar tracking and telemedicine consultations, while also utilizing SMS reminders for medications and clinic appointments,” he stated.
Marawa emphasizes the importance of integrating technology into diabetes care as a crucial step in addressing accessibility challenges, especially in light of ongoing barriers such as the affordability of insulin.
“Diabetes medications are included and incorporated into the free medicine scheme. However, some might point out that items like insulin syringes are excluded. This is something we continually encourage and request the government to consider,” she stated.
The Ministry of Health’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, has expressed support for this initiative, emphasizing the need for stronger partnerships.
By merging technological innovation with community-focused strategies, Diabetes Fiji is making significant strides in tackling the country’s most urgent health challenges. The organization is hopeful that these efforts will lead to a healthier future for all.
