The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and the National Quarantine and Inspection Authority (NAQIA) have recently entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding. This collaboration aims to strengthen and support the fisheries and aquaculture industries in Papua New Guinea.
The new agreement signifies a decade-long partnership between the two agencies, with a focus on enhancing regulatory enforcement and fostering sustainable development in these critical sectors.
This partnership initially centered on the shipment of live lobsters to Australia from 2009 onwards. Over time, it has evolved to tackle worldwide trade complexities, such as conducting crucial histamine testing for tuna exports to the European Union. This protocol was established as part of a 2017 MoU.
Friday’s (April 26) signing reflects a strong recommitment from NFA, as they have pledged K1 million to enhance technical aspects including infrastructure, laboratory equipment, and staff training.
Furthermore, the funding will support the enlistment of consultants for laboratory accreditation and bolster the surveillance of fish diseases.
The partnership solidifies the dedication of both agencies to promoting trade opportunities, strengthening biosecurity measures, and fostering the economic growth of the nation’s fisheries through sustainable practices.
