Samoa is rapidly emerging as a vibrant tech hub, with significant growth in its technology sector contributing to the nation’s economic development. In 2022, the tech industry added $25 million to Samoa’s GDP, marking a 35% increase from the previous year.
This expansion is largely driven by innovative startups across various sectors. In the e-commerce domain, platforms like the Maua App have enabled over 500 businesses to establish an online presence, reaching approximately 15,000 active customers. In fintech, companies such as Pacific Payments are enhancing financial inclusion by providing secure and efficient digital payment solutions. The agritech sector has seen the rise of firms like Levelei, whose smart irrigation systems have reduced water waste by 35% and increased crop yields for farmers.
The Samoan government has played a pivotal role in fostering this tech ecosystem. Initiatives like the Samoa StartUp Factory, launched in 2018, have supported over 30 startups by offering mentorship, networking opportunities, and seed funding.  Additionally, the Samoa Digital Strategy 2021-2025 outlines a roadmap for enhancing digital infrastructure, building a tech-skilled workforce, and promoting innovation. Collaborations between the government and private sector have further accelerated digital transformation, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts.
Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including limited funding and the need for improved digital infrastructure. In 2022, only 15% of Samoan tech companies received external investment. To address these issues, the government’s ‘Digital Samoa 2030’ plan aims to provide tax breaks for tech firms and funding programs for early-stage ventures. Furthermore, the establishment of the Samoa Innovation Technology Park is underway, aiming to attract research and development expertise and position Samoa as a regional innovation hub.
