Fiji Teams Up with Google to Launch Pacific’s Digital Connectivity Hub by 2026

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has praised Fiji’s collaboration with Google, calling it a “milestone for technology and a significant step forward in the digital economy” for both Fiji and the Pacific region.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s multi-million-dollar ICT facility in Natadola, Nadroga, on Saturday, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the transformative impact of the project, which is set to be completed by late 2026.

“This infrastructure will establish Fiji as a leading hub for digital connectivity in the Pacific,” he stated.

He further explained that the facility will house Viti Levu’s second cable landing station, a development that will strengthen internet resilience and drive Fiji’s transition to a digital economy. “It’s an investment in connectivity, people, and progress,” Mr. Rabuka concluded.

The new facility is set to host cutting-edge data servers, advanced power systems, and a cable landing station designed to support international fibre-optic cables, connecting Fiji to major global hubs such as Los Angeles. Google’s Vice President of Network Infrastructure, Brian Quigley, described the development as a symbol of innovation and economic resilience for the Pacific region.

“This project will play a key role in bridging the digital divide and advancing our mission to make the world’s information universally accessible,” he stated.

The facility’s benefits reach far beyond technological advancements. As outlined in the Access Partnership report, the project is projected to generate over 3,600 jobs and contribute $574 million (USD $250 million) to Fiji’s GDP by 2030. Additionally, it will enhance Fiji’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) industries while also positively impacting the healthcare, tourism, and education sectors.

Mr. Rabuka stated, “Google’s investment highlights Fiji’s readiness to embrace business opportunities and its potential to emerge as a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and global trade.” In addition, Google intends to utilize its AI capabilities to tackle climate challenges. This includes deploying its Flood Hub tool, which can forecast floods up to seven days in advance, aiding governments and communities in their preparation efforts. Meanwhile, Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) Chief Investment Officer Naibuka Saune described the partnership as a transformative investment for the country’s ICT sector.
