Fiji to Install Micro Modular Reactor on Ocean of Peace Vessel for Sustainable Power

On Monday, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the government is acquiring a Micro Modular Reactor (MMR), which will be installed on its Ocean of Peace vessel.

A MMR is a compact, nuclear-based energy source designed to provide efficient and safe power production, according to a report from the Fiji Times on Monday.

Rabuka emphasized in a government statement that the time has come for innovative approaches to leveraging the latest technologies. These advancements are aimed at making Fijian life cleaner while ensuring sufficient power to meet the nation’s goals at significantly reduced costs.

The Fijian government is collaborating with Lloyd’s Register of London, Deployable Energy of Houston, Texas, and Seatransport of Queensland to incorporate the MMR technology onto the 73-meter Ocean of Peace vessel.

The installation will proceed once the MMR technology demonstrates its ability to meet its objectives of cost savings, emission elimination, and safety, as stated by the prime minister.

“At that stage, the initial diesel engines will be replaced by an MMR, which will not require refueling for ten years,” Rabuka explained.

He also pointed out that the primary obstacle to Fiji’s economic growth and prosperity is the reliance on imported diesel for power generation.
