First Digital ID Wallet to be released in PNG

Timothy Masiu, the Minister for ICT, spoke at the 27th Annual General Meeting and Business Forum Expo of the Pacific Island Telecommunication Association. He talked about how far Papua New Guinea has come regarding digital change.

With the PNG Digital Transformation Policy 2020, the Digital Government Act 2022, and the National Cyber Security Centre, we have established a strong foundation for taking advantage of the digital age’s possibilities,” said Masiu.

Masiu said, “In the last six months of implementation, I can tell you that the piloted Government Cloud Infrastructure is hosting the critical services of 27 government agencies, and the National Cyber Security Centres is watching the networks and endpoint devices of 15 more government agencies.”

We will release Papua New Guinea’s first Digital ID Wallet, built on a Federated Secure Data Exchange Platform, in August, three months from now. We think that with the Digital ID Wallet, citizens’ services will improve, and the digital transformation goal in both the public and private sectors will move forward in a big way.

The Minister says collaboration and partnerships are essential in this quest. The PITA Annual General Meeting and Business Forum Expo are great places to share information, meet new people, and make intelligent partnerships. Together, we can tackle the problems, take advantage of the possibilities, and plan a path to a digitally resilient future.

Masiu said, “As we talk and think about new ways to solve problems today, let’s not forget that technology has the potential to change everything.”

Let’s ensure everyone is included in this digital change and that no one is left behind. Let’s go green and use technology to protect our environment and keep our cultural history alive.

As I stand here, I am full of hope for Papua New Guinea and the rest of the Pacific area. What we do now will affect the future of our countries and leave a memory for future generations.

“I want you all to make the most of this meeting, have good talks, and take advantage of the chances that are coming up. Together, we can use the power of technology to make the Pacific region rich, connected, and technologically robust.
