Over 60 employees from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and National Superannuation Fund Limited (NASFUND) recently participated in a comprehensive one-day training session with Cyber CX to enhance their capabilities in countering cyber threats.
Cyber CX stands as the foremost provider of top-tier cyber security services in the UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand.
As the number of internet users in PNG continues to grow rapidly, it is crucial to prioritize cyber security to educate and prepare both employees and the general public.
It is essential for public servants and trusted experts in fields like superannuation to take necessary cyber precautionary measures to safeguard personal information and valuable data.
During a recent training session, Dr. David Halfpenny, Principal Consultant for Cyber Capability, Education, and Training, and Manal Saroufim from Cyber CX Australia emphasized the importance of implementing basic security measures, such as using strong passwords or passphrases. They highlighted that these simple steps can significantly enhance the security of a system and protect it from cyber threats.
Dr. Halfpenny highlighted the growing risks associated with malicious software, phishing, and the emerging threat of AI Vishing. This new tactic involves the use of artificial intelligence to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information by employing automated voices to manipulate the individual on the other end of the line.
Numerous companies and individuals in Papua New Guinea have encountered cyber-attacks due to a lack of knowledge in this field.
Halfpenny emphasized the critical importance of maintaining secure systems, noting that a lack of knowledge in this area can leave systems vulnerable to skilled hackers. This could potentially result in the compromise of valuable information from other countries and beyond.
“Emphasizing cybersecurity measures and promoting awareness are crucial for effectively mitigating cyber threats,” he emphasized.
